Shimano

Sixteen years ago I was working in Hollywood, commuting everyday from my home in Laguna Beach, producing specials for Showtime, The Movie Channel, Paramount and Disney. I had this dream about creating a television series based on our west coast style of fishing. At that time, Penn was the world leader in fishing tackle and equipment. Today they don’t hold a candle against Shimano. But back then, they were the sh*ts, and told me to take a hike.

Shimano was just getting into the business, hungry for exposure. Toyo Shimano and Dave Pfeiffer happened to stop by my “Tribute to Tuna” booth at the Fred Hall show in Long Beach, March 1989. I explained to them what I was trying to do. Asking them if they’d like to get involved.

“The word involvement, usually has some green attached,” Toyo said, “What do you have in mind?"

We met the following week and the rest is history.

If it hadn’t been for Toyo and Dave and their willingness to take a chance, Inside Sportfishing would never have been born. I can’t thank them, and everyone at Shimano, enough for all they’ve done. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Shimano.
