Encore Broadcast – Episode #2006-001
“Fishing the Foam with Ed Dillon and his Band of Beach Bums”

The older I get the more I treasure the tranquility of fishing the inshore waters for bay bass and calicos, or working top water baits along weed lines for black bass. The peace and quite, the thrill of making a perfect cast and having a big ‘ole bass explode on your bait is what it’s all about. It’s almost the same fishing inside the foam line, along the beach. Where it’s just you and the fish. Except when the waves get big, then it becomes a different story. Join us as we revisit surf fishing with one of the gurus of the sport, Ed Dillon of Angler’s Center in Newport Beach. Ed invited a few of his fellow beach bums from All Coast Sportfishing to join us, and even though conditions were tough, these guys pulled it off. Landing some of the biggest surfperch I’d ever seen caught off Newport. Good tips on fishing the light gear and the Berkley Gulp baits add a little education to the mix.

Channel Islands Rock Fish Tagging onboard the PACIFIC DAWN

Join veteran owner/operator Pat Cavanaugh on the PACIFIC DAWN as we fish the Channel Islands on a tagging research trip for the Department of Fish and Game. Pat put us on a few good jags of fish and we were able to get over 200 tags placed in various species of rockfish. The data being collected from this study is going to help determine the future of our vertical fisheries. We’d like to thank Pat and his crew, along with all the other sport boat operators from Santa Barbara to San Diego who have donated their time, boats, money and crews in helping to secure this much needed data. We’d also like to thank Keith Poe and Chuck Myers for doing such a good job filming this important episode. If we all chip in and do our small, individual parts and practice CPR, we’re going to make a difference. Become a part of the team.

San Diego Spotted Bay Bass

Mike Gardner is one of the men who pioneered light tackle, fresh water techniques for fishing our inshore estuaries and harbors for spotted bay bass. After spending the day with him, I was addicted. Growing up I didn’t think anything could match being in the middle of a wide open albacore bite or seeing a fining marlin come up behind your jigs, or for that matter the ultimate sportfishing experience being on board one of San Diego’s long range boats for a multi-day trip south, but now, for me, it’s the bay bass. 356 days a year, they’ll bite. And when they do, there’s nothing like it. Pound for pound I’ll put them up against any fish in the ocean. They can hit like a freight train, or swipe at your plastic with such a subtle bite; you can hardly feel the twitch. And that’s what makes fishing these guys so much fun. It’s all about the bite and hook set. And PLEASE if you give these guys a try, crimp your barbs and for God’s sake don’t kill a single one of them. Forget what the F & G regs. are, this should be an all catch and release fishery. Period. Try putting a hook through a t-shirt and pull it out with the bard in tack. Now do it with the bard crimped down. It slides out smooth as a babies butt. Do the same thing with all your inshore hooks. By doing so you not only make the release a thousand times easier on the fish, you’ve just made catching them that much more difficult Challenge yourself. Push yourself, your skills and abilities. And then when you do manage to get one to the boat, you’ll know what I’m talking about. I average 20% hook up to bite ratio. Keep score for yourself and let me know how you’re doing.

10 Year Anniversary of Special of Big Boat Big Fish
Ten years ago we headed down to Fisherman’s Landing in San Diego and climbed on board Bill Poole’s beautiful EXCEL for a 16-day trip. At the time Randy Toussaint was running the boat with Pat and Bill Cavanaugh working as second tickets. The Revilla Gigedos Islands were still open and after spending a couple days rounding up the wahoo at the Hurricane, Randy brought us into Calrion, dropped the hook and we never moved. One bite lasted 36 straight hours. Guys were so tired they were hitting the racks with 200-pound tuna boiling on the corner. It turned out to be one of the most epic long-range trips in history. The DVD Big Boat Big Fish captures all the action, but we thought it would be worthwhile, bringing you a second look as this incredible trip.

Encore Broadcast – Episode #2006-008 Forbidden Zone
Midway Atoll is the most remote inhabited landmass on the entire planet. Off limits to all aircraft and ships within a 200 miles radius, to say the atoll is virtually un-touched is an understatement. As you can imagine the fishing there is beyond words. 100 pound GT s crashing the surface poppers right off the rocks, 500 pound marlin within miles of the beach, schools of big yellowfin so thick under the birds that you have to drive away from them to avoid quadruple hook ups while looking for the marlin. Think I’m full of crap? Tune in and check it out. This is as good as we’ve ever seen it anywhere in the world. It’s what fishing Hawaii a hundred years ago must have been like.

Encore Broadcast – Episode #2006-012 Wahoo
The cows are what long-range fishing is all about, but for anyone who’s ever caught them, you know first hand, the wahoo are what make long-range fishing so much fun. These speedsters have been clocked at over 50 knots and are as challenging and fun to catch as any species on earth. They hit like a freight train and that initial run can leave you speechless. There’s nothing like watching a 100 yards of line peel off you reel in just a few seconds. Highlights of wahoo and an incredible look back in time, circa the 1950’s at fishing wahoo at Clarion off an old jig boat showing these fish dive-bombing the hard baits from over 30 feet in the air. Footage you won’t even believe after you’ve seen it. All this wahoo footage is now available in our latest DVD release, TUNA TOWN.

Join us as we team up with Norm Kagawa onboard the SHOGUN on a run out to Guadalupe. Located 240 miles, due south of Point Loma this incredible island has kicked out some huge yellowtail, yellowfin and bluefin over the years. And on this particular trip, we weren’t disappointed. Outstanding action. All this, along with both of the previous wahoo shows, and a lot more is now available in our latest DVD release, TUNA TOWN.

This could be the best all around video we’ve ever produced. TUNA TOWN is now available on line with free shipping, or at your favorite tackle shop.
