Inside Sportfishing Pro Staff - Tommy Rothery Owner/Operator, "Polaris Supreme" - San Diego, Ca.
 |
Tommy Rothery got his start in the sport fishing industry in 1975 working on the “Royal Polaris” right after Bill Poole had built the boat. He stayed with Bill for a couple of years until the boat was sold to Frank LoPreste. Tommy remained on the boat as deck hand working towards and earning his Captain’s license in 1978. He moved up to second ticket and relief captain all the while gaining the respect of the long range fishing community. He then was promoted to first ticket on the “Royal Polaris” and began to run the boat as Captain. He stayed with Frank LoPreste for approximately four years in all and then moved on to the “Polaris Deluxe”, a new boat that Bill Poole has just constructed. He ran that boat as partial owner for two years and then Bill decided to build another boat, the “Polaris Supreme.” Tommy stayed on with Bill Poole running the Supreme until 1991 when Tommy and partner Tom Pfleger purchased the boat from Bill. Tommy has been the Owner/Operator of the Polaris Supreme ever since.

His dedication and wealth of experience in this fishery has made the “Polaris Supreme” one of the most successful and sought out sport fishing operations in San Diego. About The Boat
From its inception on the drawing boards, the “Polaris Supreme” was designed solely for the express purpose of carrying select groups of anglers to some of the world's most bountiful fishing spots in total comfort and safety. This first class sportfisher is 90 feet in length and has a 25 foot beam. There is optimal deck and rail space for fighting fish and once you land those trophies, the Supreme boasts a greater fish-holding capacity, per person, than any other boat in the fleet. She has state of the art electronics and navigation equipment and luxury appointments that rival those of any world-class yacht. The bait capacity consists of four topside tanks and two slammers below decks. This enables her to carry a total capacity of 350 scoops. The Polaris Supreme boasts a 4000 mile range befitting a vessel of this class and is Coast Guard licensed and inspected annually.
The galley is comfortable and spacious with seating for 26. It’s equipped with a large television and full entertainment center. There are two ice makers that can produce 400 pounds of ice daily and the food is gourmet style with fantastic hor d’ oeuvres prepared every afternoon. The food rivals the best land based restaurants and is prepared by specially trained chefs. And of course, if you have any special dietary requirements they can accommodate your particular needs.
The “Polaris Supreme” has 12 air-conditioned staterooms that are limited to two persons and on some trips it's possible to have one all to yourself. Inside you'll find reading lamps, a vanity wash basin with hot and cold water, and cedar lined closets with plenty of storage space for all your personal belongings. There are 4 heads with 3 showers and an on board water maker that delivers 840 gallons a day.
What You Can Expect
When you come on board the “Polaris Supreme” you can expect to find plenty of rail space. That’s because this operation caters to limited loads. They will carry a significantly lower number of anglers than any other boat in the fleet. This means you will get more personal attention from a professional crew of seven and that can mean a big difference in the success and enjoyment of your fishing adventure. It’s service and the personal touch that truly sets Tommy Rothery’s operation apart. If that’s what you’re after than you owe it to yourself to book a trip on the Supreme.

The “Polaris Supreme” runs trips of 3 to 6 days (24 passengers), 7 to 10 days (20 passengers) and the ultimate long range trips of 14 to 18 days (16 passengers). The waters that are fished are like an angler’s horn of plenty. You will encounter the greatest variety of species in North America. The type and size of fish depend on the time of year and length of trip. The Supreme also has some specialty trips available. The boat carries four 18’ terminator skiffs custom built by Team Baja. They are designed for chair or stand up skiff fishing and fly fishing in coastal shallows, mangroves, lagoons, and the bays of Baja California. These skiffs are also used to fish Wahoo and Tuna at the Revillagigedo Islands on the 14 to 18 day trips and are always ready to be launched in a minutes notice to chase down a big cow.
